You’d be hard-pressed to find a rockstar who doesn’t remember their garage days… months and years spent practicing in their parent’s house and playing shows to empty dive bars. While we may look at these stories as the “before they made it big” period, for rockstars, these memories signify transformation. Rather than seeing these performances as failures, they see them as building blocks to their success. If you’d like to be a rockstar in your world, it’s time to shift your focus. Stop looking at how far away you are from your BHAG – your Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal, and start looking at how far you’ve come in your career and life. Dan Sullivan describes this as the Gap and the Gain. When you’re in the gap, you’re looking at this ideal you’ve conjured up. You spend your time comparing yourself to others or to this future person you want to be. Unfortunately, like a mirage, it is always out of reach. This erodes your self-confidence and actually makes it harder to reach your goals. What you need to focus on is the gain. This means looking back to see how far you’ve come. It’s comparing yourself to your past self rather than to someone else or an idealized version of yourself. Where did you start? How far have you come in your career? Have much have you grown? What have you achieved so far? “I was thinking, if I cheated my fears, broke up with my doubts, got engaged to my faith, I can marry my dreams,” Beyonce. Grab a journal or preferred Notes program on your phone and start a list. Every time you achieve something, no matter how small it seems, jot it down. Then comes the really important part… review it. Every day, read through your list and reflect on where you came from and where you are now. The more you write and review, the more motivated you’ll be to add to your list. When you focus on the gain rather than the gap, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you go from the garage to the sold-out concert hall.
