Have you ever taken a good look at the people around you? If you want to be a rockstar in your business and your life, you may think that you have to have a ton of talent and potential. In reality, one of the biggest predictors of your success is the company you keep. When you surround yourself with negative, unambitious, lazy people, you risk being dragged down to their level. Misery loves company, and it’s difficult to maintain your desire to improve when it’s not a priority for others. However, when your peers are driven, supportive, positive people looking to better themselves and the world, you are lifted up. Wondering where your network falls? Make a mental list of your friends, family, coworkers, etc. First, ask yourself how they came to be in your life. Research has found that most relationships are chosen based on proximity rather than shared interests or values. That’s not the best way to select the people in your life! Next, hold them up against the following criteria: Brett Michaels, the lead singer of Poison, said, “Surround yourself with the people that complete you, not defeat you.” The people you spend your time with should make you a better version of yourself (and you should do the same for them). If you’ve taken stock of your relationships and realize that you’ve outgrown some of them, it’s okay to move on. It’s never too late to switch out the members of your band. Jim Rohn says “You are the average of the five people you hang out with the most.” Who are your five? As band leaders, we sometimes have to make those tough decisions to kick out members of our band. Both business and personal. In my Opportunity Rocks Keynote Presentation, one of my key points is to do what is best for the band, and do what’s best for the team. Bad energy is toxic to your band and you need to get rid of it ASAP before you lose other great band members. Surround yourself with good people. Whether they’re the best or not, people are capable of learning if they’ve got good hearts and they’re good souls. – Kid Rock
