Have you ever noticed that the rock stars with staying power have one thing in common? They purposefully reinvent themselves… constantly. It’s orchestrated evolution. Take Madonna for example. The “Material Girl” we all loved in the ’80s. She has been an actress, mother, yogini, disco diva, Mistress Dita, and now, shows women around the world to be proud of their age as she fights against ageism.

As business owners and leaders, we can learn a lot from this attitude of creativity and reinvention. Here’s how:

Revisit (and reevaluate) your Why. If you’ve been in business for years, you may have fallen into the “That’s how we’ve always done it” trap. Take the time to examine your Why and determine whether it still holds true for your business or if it’s time for a reinvention. A great question to help you develop a strong why comes from Jay Z where he asked the question “how can we change the industry together?” In the year 2005, Jay Z walked off the streets of LA into entertainment giant live nation’s office. And instead of asking the question how much money are you gonna pay me, Jay Z asked the question above “how can we change this industry together?” When you ask yourself or your organization that question that’s when you help fine-tune and develop a strong why. And when the why is strong enough but how automatically shows up. Here’s an insider tip: try dropping this question at your next band or team meeting give everyone permission to speak freely and just zip it. Start writing down their answers. They will give you gold. Take a look around. Reinvention is often timely. While you don’t want to be constantly following trends, it’s important to know what’s happening in the world so you can create a strategic plan that works with the world market. A true Rockstar that can identify the trends can almost predict the future and direct your band or organization in that direction. How valuable is that? Identify your rock stars. Every organization has them and in order to create change and reinvent your business, you’ll need to understand who on your team has the power to inspire others and lead the business to success. Celebrate the fear. Change is scary, and for many, something to be avoided at all costs. Unfortunately, that’s not the mindset that will move you into the future. Create a culture that embraces change and celebrates fear. Do you have to be like Ricky Bobby and learn to drive with a cougar in the car. You have to drive with fear. Fear is normal, it’s expected, and it’s something you’ll need to move past in order to thrive. Grant Cardone says to use fear as your GPS. If you don’t know what direction to go or to start it straight for what you fear the most. Be open and vulnerable with your team. Watching you work through your own fear will give them the strength they need to handle their own. The world is constantly changing which means you’ll need to constantly reinvent to stay ahead. You can change the times or you can change with the times. But if you change with the times, you might be unemployed or out of a gig. Get inspired by the great rock stars of our time and enjoy success now and well into the future.
