Let's Connect
We’re a few months into the new year, and now is a great time to do an accountability check-in… “What gets measured improves, what gets measured and reported improves exponentially.” So how are those goals going? If you’re like most people, December was filled with excitement, hope, and a top 10 list of things you were going to implement and achieve in 2023. In order to achieve you must first believe, right? “I’m going to get in shape, I am going to be the top performer on my team, stop smoking, ask for a promotion at work, spend more time with my kids, write a book, find a band to jam with on weekends.” However, as the days have ticked on, you find that you’re still eating late-night ice cream, working up the nerve to approach your boss, and dreaming of performing at a sold-out club and still an average performer. You’ve fallen into the New Year rut, and if you want to be a rock star in your life and business, it’s time to revisit, redefine, and clarify your goals. Or as I call it, your Big Unreasonable Dream ( BUD).

Focus on The Important, Not The Urgent

I get it. You want to do “all the things!” You can… if you’re willing to pay the price. Just not all at once. When we identify everything as important, we’re actually saying that nothing is important. Consider the guitarist who decides they want to learn other instruments. Trying to learn the keyboard, drums, and saxophone at the same time would be a recipe for failure. Instead, they’d tackle one instrument at a time, master it, and then move on to the next. So, go back to the list of goals you wrote in December or January and prioritize them. Important goals are only things that are directly connected to your end game.

Your Big Unreasonable Dream.

What are the two (no more than three) items you’d like to accomplish this year?  Jim Collins says if you have more than three priorities or goals you don’t have any. Your bandwidth is too thin. You wind up being busy and not productive. Focus on your big three or as Brian Tracy says your three biggest frogs. Eat them first.  Focus on those and once you’ve done those three you need to select three more important goals or priorities and then do those. Everything is in three. You should have 3 Clear BUD Goals- five years out, 3 BUD Goals-three years out, three for one year, 3 for 6 months, 3 for one month, 3 for the week, and 3 each day. Not only does this help clarify your vision or goal but it also makes it easier to measure. Remember the quote from above?

Plan

It’s very easy to say you want to achieve something. But what are you actually doing to reach your goal? A lead singer doesn’t just lay in bed imagining what it would be like to be on stage (visualization is important, but not everything). They work with a vocal coach, practice every day with the band, and play as many shows as they can to fine-tune their craft. Two important things to remember are to make sure you’re taking daily massive action on the important things not the urgent, and find a way to keep yourself accountable. Schedule it, get an accountability partner as I do, or use a reminder app on your mobile device.

Recalibrate

Not every plan works. If you’ve been chugging along, carrying out the steps you intended, but nothing is happening, it may be time to reevaluate what you’re doing and forge a new path. But don’t get frustrated. Going the wrong way is better than going no way. When you’re going the wrong way, at least then you will receive feedback and know which way to go.  Celebrate failure as feedback. It’s a very valuable tool. Trent Reznor, the frontman for the band Nine Inch Nails, actually began his musical career in the synth-pop genre. Not reaching his goals in that genre, he pivoted to industrial rock and has now changed the face of music with his own band and his contributions to others. If what you’re doing isn’t working – change directions! Setting big goals is important, but focusing on a few, planning how you’ll reach them, and recalibrating when they don’t work, is essential for Rock Star Success. After all, it’s not rocket science, it’s Rock-IT science. Mark’s Rock Star Keynote motivational speech has openings in 2023, ready to be booked for your company today.
